It's the volts that jolts, but the mill's that thrillsOr building a better power supply...7th March 2003 A long time ago (well, in Jan 1995 actually) a man called Walt Jung published a series of articles in the US publication 'The Audio Amateur' entitled 'Regulators for High Performance Audio'. In the course of the next 4 issues the articles described the measurable performance parameters of a DC power supply, and methodologies for measuring them. It examined the performance of various monolithic IC regulators, and some well established discrete topologies (POOGE, Sulzer) then added the icing on the cake of Walt's own design. A few years later, and after a lot more hard work, an update to the original article was published, addressing some issues with the original design, notably the often challenging problem of stability, and further circuit enhancements. Whilst the benefits of audio power supplies have been known by many well-respected audio manufacturers, many are still using basic components with limited ultimate performance. Does this matter? In a nutshell YES it does matter - a lot! So over the last year, I've been investigating just how important it is - an enlightening and occasionally frustrating ride.
